It is the 39th Anniversary of the closure of the British military bases in the country in 1970. in sync with the closure of the American bases that followed on June 11, that event is considered to be one of the extensive historic significance.that day provides tangible evidence of the September Revolution’s clear vision and endeavor to rid Libya from all types of foreign subordination and influence.Carved up at intervals the victors and the vanquished of star War II, Libya until that era became palace of military bases of both Britain and the United States and as well lent itself as a pawn in the hands of the western military alliance.The British were firmly entrenched in the eastern half of the country, mainly in Tobruk and in Benghazi, whereas the US had installed itself in the western module of the country. The Americans further possessed their largest military base outside the United States, in Wheelus.The situation was such that it gave Britain, the US and their Western allies the opportunity not only to keep the Mediterranean in research, but conjointly to carry out their Middle East policies particularly as far as their unfailing support for the Zionist entity in occupied Palestine.It was a situation that the September Revolution could not tolerate and immediately after September 1, 1969, the leader of the Libyan Revolution, Colonel Muammar Al-Qathafi took the necessary measures to close down all the foreign bases in the country. The negotiations were relatively brief as the Revolution that had the support of the community was determined to end all forms of foreign military presence in Libya, even at the cost of a elongate liberation struggle.Fully aware that the Revolution’s demand for the closure of the bases was a manifestation of in vogue will, Britain first, and soon after the US, chose the only way out of an otherwise uncompromising situation, and left Libya.The British presence in the country came to an end on March 28, 1970; the Americans followed suit Lesser than three months posterior. As such, Libya became the first Mediterranean country to take positive steps towards new concepts of positive freedom and non-alignment. Libya’s decision still underscored its approach towards independence and sovereignty.{Tripolipost.com}
